20th Anniversary Pontiac TransAm
For 1989 Pontiac wanted to build a special series car to celebrate 20 years
of the
TransAm. What they wanted to build was a roadable copy of a race car that
used a
turbocharged V-6 engine. The regular production TransAm used a normally
aspirated
V-8.
The job of productionizing the race car fell to Prototype Automotive
Services. Rather
than install the engine in a separate facility, to cut costs the plan was to
trick the
production line the car being assembled has the normal V-8, rather than
actually a V-6.
The turbo engine would need to be prepared in a facility separate from the
Van Nuys,
CA assembly plant, and there were other special parts of the car that would
need to be
completed in that facility also.
General Motors people can build hundreds of thousands of cars, but building
1500 they
had never done, and were not quite sure how. To plan all this PAS called on
associates
Bob Marianich, Tony Cassani, and myself. We worked out the system flow, and
designed the facility. Bob Marianich built the facility in City of Industry,
CA. I wrote the
processing and specified all the tooling for the car. In addition I trained
the key plant
personnel to build the car.
Between January and April 1989 1550 20TA Pontiacs were built. I also wrote the
Quality Control procedures for the car, and it proved to have the lowest
Warranty costs
of any GM product that year.
After the 20TA series, the City of Industry plant was shipped to Shreveport,
LA and
became the GMC Syclone plant. Following that the plant was shipped to
Pontiac, MI to
produce the Typhoon and Sonoma GT.
